What’s the Difference Between Sage 50 and Sage 100 for Repetitive Manufacturers?

Summary: If you manufacture products and you’re comparing the difference between Sage 50 and Sage 100, you may run into a phrase on the Sage 50 site that sounds like it meets your needs: “job and project costing.” Here’s what that feature does, why it doesn’t help manufacturers, and what Sage 100 offers instead.

On the official Features page for Sage 50, Sage says the software handles “Job and project costing” and promises you can “easily set up job records, phases, and cost codes.” The Sage 50 Overview page says you can “customize job statuses,” and informs you that the base Sage 50 plan (Pro Accounting) offers “job management.”

“Great!” you say, “That sounds exactly like what my manufacturing company needs.”

But it’s not. And once you see why, it’s much easier to compare Sage 50 to Sage 100.

What “Job Costing” in Sage 50 Means

Job costing is cost accounting for service and project-based businesses. Think of roofing companies, art-framing shops, computer repair people, or landscapers. Each of those services will complete a job (or project) for their customers, but each “job” is a distinct, custom undertaking that doesn’t repeat exactly the same way twice.

In Sage 50, you set up a Job, then you can break it into Phases and Cost Codes for more granular tracking. From there, entering data is on you: every time you buy materials, log labor hours, or record an expense related to that job, you’ll have to manually add the transaction onto the right Job, Phase, and Cost Code. When you’re done, Sage 50 totals it all up so you know what the job cost you and whether you made money on it.

That’s a fabulous tool for the businesses Sage 50 is built for. It’s paired with inventory and accounting capability, including a Cash Flow Manager, daily cost and quantity tracking on inventory, a choice of costing methods, bank reconciliation, AP automation, and a “Pay Now” option for invoices that helps businesses get paid faster. Sage 50 also includes 150+ reports covering Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, sales tax, expenses, profitability, inventory, payroll, and those “jobs” we talked about, and it includes reports built for specific industries. It supports up to 40 users.

But none of that is manufacturing software. It’s financial management and invoicing software with a project-costing model layered on top.

What manufacturers need is a Bill of Materials.

Why Job Costing Isn’t a Bill of Materials

Here’s the key difference between Sage 50 and Sage 100:

  • Sage 50’s job costing tells you what something cost after you built it.
  • Sage 100’s Bill of Materials (BOM) tells you what something will cost before you build it.

Manufacturers make repeatable, defined products. They produce the same finished item, built from the same set of components, in the same stages, over and over, day after day, year after year. A BOM makes that repeatability much, much easier.

Why? Because a BOM provides a structured list of every component and quantity a finished item requires, plus the labor and steps it takes to build it. Once that structure exists, the system can automatically remove the right materials from inventory (or count them as allocated before a finished good is completed). It can roll up the right cost every time you produce a specific item, without anyone having to manually enter which components were used, how much labor it took, or what steps to follow.

Sage 50 has no BOM structure and no true production-tracking process. If you tried to run manufacturing production through its job costing function, you’d need to tie your material purchases, labor hours, and steps to the correct job, for every unit. That process works for a one-off custom roof, but it’s downright awful for a manufacturer whose core business relies on producing the same item, in volume, over and over.

What Does Sage 100 Bill of Materials Offer?

Sage 100 Complete supports Bills of Materials as built-in functionality. It offers 5 flexible bill types, but the most important ones are:

  • Standard bills, which can include multiple layers and sub-assemblies, phantom bills, miscellaneous charge codes, component items, and comment lines
  • Kit bills, which provide a single-level structure for simpler assemblies, and also include component items and comment lines

You also get base bills with options, so you can build flexibility into a single bill rather than creating a new one for every variation, as well as engineering change control, which keeps a record of every change made to a bill over time. One-step production entry (or disassembly entry) updates inventory automatically once a finished good is produced or an assembly is broken back down.

  • Work Tickets, which are fast to create and capture quantity, process steps, materials and components needed, along with budgets for labor and materials.
  • Scheduling, which helps you plan your dates and capacity.

When it comes to the difference between Sage 50 and Sage 100, you can see that one product is actively building out manufacturing functionality, release after release. The other isn’t, because it was never built to.
